Prague, Czech Republic

Organization Overview

The organization 'Rozkoš bez rizika' represents sex workers in the Czech Republic. Dr. Hana Malinová has been their president for 25 years. They raise awareness about the issues through various means, including theater performances where sex workers act. They estimate there are 13,000 sex workers in the Czech Republic, but they only have 9,000 members in their records.

Current Challenges

The organization mainly deals with the aftermath of the 'golden age' of sex work, which caught them unprepared. Countries that were among the first to decriminalize prostitution and establish a free market for this activity are now facing the social problems of these workers. The issue is serious, as the supply of sex work exceeds demand, creating 'dumping' and unfair competition, and this whole situation is pushing workers into an economic and social time bomb.

Economic Situation

Due to the poor economic state of sex workers, the level and standard of not only services but also healthcare, hygiene, etc., are declining. Sex workers in the most widespread activity earn 1,000 euros, while the minimum wage in Prague is between 600 and 800 euros. They note that more and more single mothers with one or more children are opting for this work.

Services Offered

Their offices operate in four locations, which have a free gynecological clinic where they provide testing and take swabs. In the capital, they also have a mobile clinic with which they want to bring the importance of testing for communicable diseases closer to all their members.

Activities and Funding

On an annual basis, they organize several theater performances and events and publish some publications. They are funded by donations, state, and European funds.

Comparison with Slovenia

Although the activity is the same, the history, economy, culture of recreational sexuality, and habits are different. We are united in the belief that Slovenia is before the golden age of sex work. The responsibility of sex worker representatives is therefore all the greater, as they can preventively prevent the consequences of an economic or social collapse. We agreed with Mrs. Hana that we will be the hosts next time.
